How to Measure a Door: The Complete Step by Step Guide

Step 1: Measure the Door Height

Step 1: Measure the Door Height

Step 1: Measure the Door Height

How to do it:

1. Fully open the door so you can access the entire edge.

2. Place your tape measure at the bottom of the door — not the floor, but the bottom edge of the door panel itself.

3. Extend the tape up to the top of the door and note the measurement.

4. Record the measurement in millimetres or inches (depending on what you prefer or what the supplier requests).

Tips:

• Ensure the tape measure is straight and not angled.

• Most standard UK internal doors are 1981 mm tall, but never rely on standard sizes — always measure.

Step 2: Measure the Door Width

Step 1: Measure the Door Height

Step 1: Measure the Door Height

How to do it:

1. Close the door so the full width is visible.

2. Measure across the door from the left edge to the right edge at the widest point.

3. Keep the tape measure level and straight.

4. Record the measurement.

Tips:

• Doors can sometimes vary slightly in width from top to bottom.

For maximum accuracy, measure:

• Top

• Middle

• Bottom

If they differ, write down the largest measurement.

Step 3: Measure the Door Thickness

Step 3: Measure the Door Thickness

Step 3: Measure the Door Thickness

How to do it:

1. Open the door so the edge is easy to access.

2. Place the tape measure across the door edge, touching both faces.

3. Read and record the measurement.

Why thickness matters:

• Modern internal doors are commonly 35 mm thick.

• Fire doors are usually 44 mm thick.

• Hinges, latch sets, and frames need the correct thickness to fit safely.

Step 4: Measure the Hinge Size

Step 3: Measure the Door Thickness

Step 3: Measure the Door Thickness

How to do it:

1. Keep the door open so you can clearly see the hinge plates.

2. Measure the height of the hinge plate (top to bottom).

3. Measure the width of the hinge when it is open and flat.

4. Count how many hinges your door uses (typically 2 or 3).

5. Note the position of each hinge by measuring:

• From the top of the door to the top hinge

• From the bottom of the door to the bottom hinge

• And the spacing of any middle hinge

Tips:

• Standard hinges are often 76 mm or 102 mm tall, but sizes vary.

• Accurate hinge placement ensures the new door hangs perfectly.
