How to measure skirting & architrave

Step 1: Measure Your Skirting

step 2: Measure Your Architrave

step 2: Measure Your Architrave

Height

Decide how tall you want the skirting to be.

Taller boards suit traditional homes; shorter boards suit modern rooms.

Thickness

Check how far the door frames (linings) sit out from the wall.

Choose skirting the same or slightly thicker so the architrave lines up neatly.

Room Length

Measure each wall individually.

Don’t include door openings.

Add all lengths together.

Add 10–15% extra for cuts, corners, and mistakes.

step 2: Measure Your Architrave

step 2: Measure Your Architrave

step 2: Measure Your Architrave

Width:

Choose a width that suits your skirting height (e.g., wider architrave for taller skirting).

Thickness:

Match your skirting thickness for a clean, even finish.

Count Doors:

Each door needs 1 full set of architrave:

• 2 vertical legs

• 1 horizontal head

Add 10–15% extra for mistakes and trimming.

Step 3: Work Out Quantities

Step 3: Work Out Quantities

Step 3: Work Out Quantities

Skirting

Total wall length × 1.10 = amount you need

(or ×1.15 if you want more waste allowance)

Architrave

Number of door sets = number of doors

If buying by the metre:

1 set ≈ 5.2m (2 × 2.1m legs + 1 × 1m head)
